Dive The S.S.YONGALA

The “SS YONGALA” also known as Townsville’s Titanic is regularly touted as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world. The Yongala went down almost 100 years ago during a fierce category five cyclone with wind speeds over 200km/h and remained hidden in the coral sea for decades, about 12 nautical miles offshore.

As time went by the incredible nutrients of the warm tropical seas transformed her into an oasis of life, soft corals and black coral trees completely cover her hull, schools of human sized giant trevally and massive bat fish patrol the waters above her decks and over 45 species of nudibranch can be found on the rubble surrounding the wreck.

A family of Giant Queensland Grouper cruise like satellites around her bow and visitors such as Eagle Rays, Whale sharks and Humpback Whales add a touch of excitement to dives on this denizen of the deep.

The Yongala wreck is the must do dive of North Queensland.  SALT scuba diving will take you in our Super Fast Catamaran “SALT SPRAY”, the fastest dive boat in Townsville directly to the wreck, with no more than 10 people on board.
